DESCRIPTION

"WHY LILAC AND CONKER WILL BE EXPELLED FROM VIENNA?"
The rumor about the olfaction which assures a sense of home in Vienna or why lilac and conker will be removed from the city.

This art work deals humorous though serious with puns and with the Viennese dialect about the similarities of smell and rumor and Viennese Identities.
Smell and rumor derive from similar etymological roots in the German language: ‘evaporation’ and ‘shouting’.
The artist an design researcher Mateus-Berr developed this art work based on her research work on inner images/constructions of the identity of Vienna, regarding its olfaction: Expert interviews with landscape architects of Vienna concluded that lilac and conker are the most beloved and used plants in the capital. She postpones the question like “How far reassemble identities with stereotypes and how is this used in political manipulation” by using quotations of local election advertising. What is the factual smell of Viennese identity? She placed several fragrance diffusers in the exhibition space, using smells associated with Vienna. But some of these smells, which work as identifiers of Vienna, in reality are exotic migrants, eg. from Turkey (Lilac e.g. is colloquial called ‘Turkish Elder’).
To enhance that “Vienna is not becoming Istanbul” (election advertising) lilac and conker will be removed from Vienna.
