About the Exhibition

Iakovos Kambanellis and his work in Vienna

"100 Artists - 100 Artworks of Freedom" A multimedia exhibition of works at the Diplomatic Academy.

Elena Strubakis presents in cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna from July 22 - 24, 2021 in honor of Iakovos Kambanellis and his only prose work "Freedom Came in May" another artistic project:

one hundred artists "tell" in their paintings the entire book.

Artists and schoolchildren accepted their invitation to create pictures with great commitment and enthusiasm. They all show a picture of a passage from each of the 37 chapters. The illustrated narrative of the important book, which is unique in the relevant literature, will be presented to the public for the first time for three days as a multimedia exhibition of works.

The joint presentation of around 100 works of art in one place on the subject of National Socialism and the Mauthausen concentration camp is a novelty.

The event "100 Artists - 100 Artworks of Freedom" is under the aegis of Christian Cardinal Schönborn, Chief Rabbi Jaron Engelmayer, Bishop Michael Chalupka, Metropolitan Arsenios Kardamakis as well as Federal Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Mayor Michael Ludwig.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Mauthausen survivor and famous writer, 2022 was declared the "Iakovos Kambanellis Year" by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Initiator Elena Strubakis says of the exhibition,

"I think it is spectacular that so many artists have created images to one text. It is unusual that the artists have made the attempt to describe their pictures. In comparison the different pictorial, formal and color languages, the compositions and their effects on us. It's all wonderfully exciting."
